Dermal piercings, only have one end of the jewellery emerging from the surface of the skin, the other end is embedded in the dermal layer of the skin. This gives the appearance of having small gems or balls that sit on the surface of the skin. This type of piercing is becoming popular nowadays because it can be placed on almost any flat surface in the body, allowing decoration of areas that are difficult to pierce with regular piercings. In addition, patterns can be made with multiple dermal piercings. Healing time varies with Dermal piercings, this will depend on where the piercing is situated. Piercing Aftercare

Main Aftercare Expand

Congratulations on your new piercing

now the successful healing and enjoyment of your new piercing is up to you!

We recommend that you clean your piercing 2 times a day with the recommended cleaning solutions listed below. You may have dry scabs around the jewellery, this is normal. You must remember not to pick the scabs off, as they are there to help protect your piercing. Only remove scabs while cleaning your piercing with a cotton bud, not your fingers and only if the scabs fall off easily. Do not be too rough and over clean.

Do not intentionally move your piercing during the healing process.

This includes: twisting, turning, general touching even while cleaning. This is because skin cells are extremely delicate and the movement will prevent the piercing from healing quickly and increase your chance of infection.

It is essential to keep your piercing germ free to assist with the healing phase, remember that a new piercing is an open wound.

Skin piercings generally take approximately 8 to 12 weeks for the external surface to heal. During this time you may experience redness around the jewellery, tenderness and some excretion of fluids. This is a completely normal part of the healing process. If your piercing is feeling tender or you are nervous about potentially knocking and bumping it, please cover your piercing with a plaster.

avoid touching your piercing with your fingers as they transfer harmful bacteria which may potentially cause an infection. If you touch your piercing, you must wash your hands thoroughly first.

EAR LOBE

Ear lobe piercings are generally very easy to take care of.  We recommend that you clean your piercing 2 x daily with skin aftercare solution. Put the recommended solution on the end of a cotton bud and gently clean the front and back surface. We do not recommend that you twist or turn your earring, this will only increase the chance of infection. When you twist the  ear lobe piercing it causes the healing cells to rip;….. Would you pick a scab daily to help it heal?

Your piercing will generally take approximately 4 – 6 weeks to heal.

We do not recommend that you change or start stretching your piercing for that period of time.

Cartilage Aftercare Expand

Cartilage piercing

To care for your new cartilage piercing you should clean it with the recommended skin aftercare solution 2 times a day. Cartilage piercings are extremely sensitive to knocking and bumping! Twisting, turning and any general touching will cause the piercing to swell and will increase the healing time. If your piercing is knocked or touched often a small lump may form beside the piercing known as hypertrophic scarring. This lump is your bodies way of protecting your piercing from knocks and bumps and is very common. To treat this, simply apply ‘betadine’ antiseptic liquid as directed, this is  available from your local pharmacy.

Important: due to the sensitivity of cartilage piercings, it is common for healing to take approximately 9 – 12 months.

Nose Gun Aftercare Expand

Nose Piercing Gun

For nose piercings, we recommended that you clean your new piercing 2 times a day, both inside and outside for at least 6 weeks. To do this, use the recommended cleaning solution on a cotton bud and gently clean around the piercing to remove any soft scabs. Nose piercings are cartilage piercings and are extremely sensitive to knocks and bumps. Excessive cleaning  and knocking will increase your healing time and may cause a small lump to form beside your piercing, and will increase swelling on the inside, if this happens please do not be concerned , this is  normal and is easily treated, please contact the store for further assistance.

System 75:

The titanium “system 75” nose stud is designed to be worn the whole time while  healing. It has a slightly larger end on the inside which helps prevent this stud from falling out, so wearing a plaster while sleeping is not required ( however you may wear one if you are a rough sleeper or for peace of mind).  After approximately 6 weeks the swelling on the inside should have come down enough to put your desired nose stud or ring in.

Please feel free to come in and see the staff for a free clean and check up

Nose Ring Aftercare Expand

Nose Piercing Ring

To care for your new nose piercing you should clean it with the recommended skin aftercare solution 2 times a day. Nose piercings are extremely sensitive to knocking and bumping!

Nose Stud Aftercare Expand

Nose piercing smaller needle stud

To care for your new nose piercing you should clean it with the recommended skin aftercare solution 2 times a day. Nose piercings are extremely sensitive to knocking and bumping!

Here at keen on piercing there is a range of jewellery available for nose piercings performed with a needle.  If you have opted for the smallest needle stud available, you will need to perform the following steps during the healing process:

  1. When first pierced your nose stud will have a 45 degree bend placed in the stud. This is to make sure the stud is securely in place during the day. However this bend is not strong enough to prevent the stud from falling out. (We recommend that you sleep with a plaster on your nose piercing).
  2. Approximately 6 weeks after being pierced the swelling on the inside of your nose should have settled down and you may place a 90 degree or ‘l shaped’ bend in your nose stud. At this point you should no longer need to sleep with a plaster.

Lip Aftercare Expand

Lip piercing

Lip piercings have 2 surfaces that require cleaning. The inside and the outside.

To clean the inside of your piercing use our recommended mouth aftercare solution. Rinse with the solution of your choice after each time you eat, drink or smoke for 5 – 7 days after having your lip pierced.

For the outside surface simply place our recommended skin aftercare solution on a cotton bud and gently remove any soft scabs surrounding your lip piercing for approximately 4-6  weeks. During the first 3 weeks you may experience some redness around the outside surface of your piercing, this is completely normal. It is important to remember not to touch or pick at any scabs as this can transfer harmful bacteria from your fingers into your piercing causing increased redness and increasing your chance of infection.

Your piercer will have pierced your lip with either a labret bar or a ring. These are slightly larger than your lip, because during the healing phase it is extremely common for lip piercings to swell. This swelling can last anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks depending on the person. It is important to note that playing with your piercing either with your hands or your tongue will irritate the healing piercing causing it to remain swollen for a longer period of time. Once the swelling has come down it is important that you return to purchase a shorter labret or ring that fits your lip better to prevent future complications or general discomfort.

Please note: if you were pierced with a labret bar it is important that you regularly check that your ball is screwed on tightly.

Please feel free to come in and see the staff for a free clean and check up

Tongue Aftercare Expand

Tongue Piercing

To care for your tongue piercing we recommend rinsing your mouth with one of the recommended mouth aftercare solutions highlighted in your AfterCare sheet. After eating, drinking or smoking for the first two weeks it is important ensure no food particles remain trapped inside your piercing. Your tongue is pierced with a long barbell to allow for swelling. This swelling can last anywhere from 6 days to 2 weeks. While your tongue is swollen you should eat soft foods that do not require you to chew, such as soup, potato & gravy, yoghurt etc. This will help prevent you from biting down on your swollen tongue or the longer barbell.

To help decrease the swelling and minor discomfort that can occur; we highly recommend taking anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, (as directed) as well as sucking on ice or an ice block. After approximately 2 weeks the swelling should have reduced significantly, at this time you should downsize your tongue jewellery. Downsizing your jewellery will prevent added irritation caused by movement as well as reducing the risk of damage to your teeth.

Please feel free to come in and see the staff for a free clean and check up

Web Aftercare Expand

Web Piercing

Oral web piercings are through the delicate webbing either in your upper lip, lower lip or underneath your tongue. Due to their location in the mouth they are likely to move frequently throughout the healing process, causing small lumps to form on either side of the jewellery. This is completely normal; the lumps will disappear as the piercing settles. To help assist with the healing it is important that you avoid playing with your piercing, as this will increase the level of irritation.

It is recommended that you clean your web piercing by rinsing your mouth out with one of the recommended Mouth AfterCare Solutions, after you eat, drink or smoke for approximately 1 week. If you are experiencing any swelling we suggest that you stop playing with your web piercing and take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen.

Please feel free to come in and see the staff for a free clean and check up

Septum Aftercare Expand

Septum Piercing

To care for your new septum piercing, we suggest that you clean your piercing 2 x daily with the recommended solution on our main aftercare sheet.

For the 1st few weeks after getting your piercing we suggest that you do not move it.  This includes rotating, moving it from side to side and flipping it up and down.

Either leave your piercing flipped up or leave it down. Once the piercing has healed then you will be able to flip it up and down whenever you want.

Septum piercing healing time varies from person to person.  We have found that in general the septum piercing takes from 3-6 months to fully heal.  You can generally change your piercing after 2 months.

Please do not hesitate to contact the staff anytime, we are happy to help change you jewellery over at no extra cost if the jewellery is purchased from us or we charge $5 if you purchase jewellery elsewhere.

You can come in and see us anytime for a free clean and check-up.  If this is inconvenient then please contact us via facebook or instagram or call us.

To care for your new surface piercing, we suggest that you clean your piercing 2 x daily with the recommended solution on our main aftercare sheet.

For the 1st few months after getting your piercing we suggest that you do not move it. This includes twisting the jewellery and moving the jewellery from side to side.

Your surface piercing healing time varies greatly from person to person.  We have found that the surface piercing takes from 4-12 months to fully heal.  You can generally change your piercing after 3 months if your piercing is pain free and causing you no issues.

we suggest that for the 1st few weeks that you cover your piercing with a plaster every day, this will stop aggravation and assist you better with your healing time.

Please note: sometimes surface piercings can grow out. What does this mean? This means that your piercing will be in a continual state of healing and that the distance between the holes will get smaller and smaller over time.  Generally there is no need to be too concerned, all piercings grow out a little bit and most of them find where it suits them and then they heal up. However, if your piercing is bright red/purple in between the holes then we would suggest that you remove your piercing. This will leave less scaring.

Please do not hesitate to contact the staff anytime.  We are happy to help you change your jewellery over at no extra cost if the jewellery is purchased from us or we charge $5 if you purchase jewellery elsewhere.

you can come in and see us anytime for a free clean and check-up.  If this is inconvenient then please contact us via facebook, instagram or call us.

Navel Aftercare Expand

Navel piercing

A navel or belly button piercing is a simple skin piercing. To assist with healing, clean your piercing 2 times daily with one of our recommended skin aftercare solution. Apply the solution to a cotton bud and gently remove any soft scabs from the area surrounding the piercing at both the top and the bottom hole.

It is important that you do not move your jewellery while the piercing is healing. This includes; moving it up and down, twisting, turning, general touching or picking at scabs forming around the outer edge of the hole. Moving the piercing will cause irritation than can result in your navel piercing growing out, and can transfer harmful bacteria from your hands that increase your risk of infection. We suggest that for the first week you sleep with a plaster over your navel piercing to prevent added knocks and bumps while adjusting to your new piercing. You may also want to wear a plaster if planning to wear clothing that may irritate the area or, if you have any physical activity planned.

Please note: while navel piercings are a small area of skin, they do take between 6 – 12  months to fully heal. Changing your jewellery while your piercing is still healing may cause damage to the healing skin cells on the inside of your piercing resulting in increased irritation and a longer healing period.

Dermal Aftercare Expand

Dermal anchor

A dermal anchor is a semi-permanent single point surface piercing that can be placed almost anywhere on the body. 4Mm underneath your skin there is a small “t” shaped plate, with one side longer than the other. This plate has 3 small holes designed so that the skin will grow into the plate, anchoring the dermal in place. To ensure that your dermal anchor heals flush against the skin it is extremely important that you wear a plaster over it at all times for at least one month. This will ensure that the plate is constantly in the same place allowing for a much stronger anchor. If you wish to keep your dermal for an extended period of time, you must make sure that you continue to care for it for as long as you have it. If you knock or bump your piercing you should cover it with a plaster for 1-3 days following the trauma to ensure that any damage to the healed tissue may repair. You may also find that it will have small scabs after the first month.Do not pick and touch with your fingers. This is totally normal and nothing to worry about. Simply clean your piercing as instructed and cover with a plaster if required.

To clean your dermal anchor, simply use one of the recommended skin aftercare solutions on a cotton bud. Gently remove any soft scabs from the area surrounding the head of the dermal. Picking and touching can cause damage to the skin attempting to attach itself to the plate.

If you wish to have your dermal removed, please come in and see us for a free consultation.
